Gabriel lay naked on his side, his body seemingly relaxed as he propped himself up on one elbow and watched. But the last thing he felt was relaxed. His eyes were locked on Nicole, and he was having trouble deciding where to look. On the one hand there were her breasts, soft and weighty, with those hard, dark chocolate nipples pointing straight at him. They swayed towards and away from him, following the back and forth rhythm of her hips as they rocked against her fingers. There were those soft curvy hips and stomach. And then there were her thighs spread wide on his bed as she knelt in front of him, the sight of her stroking fingers cast in shadow under the fabric of that little pleated skirt.

He moistened his lips, his mouth suddenly dry as he found it harder and harder to breathe. There were so many things about Nicole that were driving him crazy now that he was allowing himself to really look at her. Her skin was warm, velvety, and felt even softer under his fingertips than it looked. There wasn't a part of her that couldn't be classified as curvy, even if her arms and legs were long and toned, and he loved the way the contours of her body fit in his greedy palms. But it was her face that really took his breath away. Her sable eyes were locked on his, watching and waiting for him to take her, forced to stoke her own heat while he reclined just inches away. Her cute nose and round cheeks, which he used to pinch for fun, her red and swollen lips and the gasps that escaped them. All of it made him crazy. But nothing made him crazier than the sound of her voice, husky and urgent with arousal.

"Touch me, Gabriel... please."

He smiled, relishing her supplication. He was killing himself laying mere inches away from her, making her touch all the places he wanted to caress himself.

"I told you, I want to see you make yourself come first," he scolded, shaking his head. "Did you come yet, sweetheart?"

"Please..."

The way she said that word, somewhere between a demanding growl and an imploring whimper, made a rush of warmth flood his skin. Her eyes never left his face and they continued to plead with him even though her mouth was busy sighing with pleasure. His teeth scraped against his bottom lip. He rolled over onto his stomach so he was facing her, letting his hips roll and slowly relieve some of his own tension against the bed. His fingers traced lightly over her thigh just above her knee. Her strokes started to grow more frenzied.

"Like that, Nicole?"

She nodded. "More,” she sighed. Her hair was down around her shoulders, fluttering in front of her mouth as her breathing grew more labored.

His hand curved into the contour of her smooth, toned thigh and slid up slowly, disappearing under the hem of her skirt. He stopped there, rubbing the satiny flesh with his thumb.

"How's that?"

Her eyes were blazing as she looked down on him, silently daring him to stop there. He liked that look, liked having her turned on almost to the point of anger. It was something that seemed to set her apart from the other girls he had fucked in the past. With them, subjugation was usually the end result. Even Marta, who had been feistier than most, would only beg for him to finish what he started. Nicole didn’t just want to surrender. She needed him to surrender, too. She needed him to not just take, but give, until he was breaking his own rules of the game just to watch her fall with him.

"Not good enough." She stared him down, even as she seemed to be struggling to speak the words. "I need to come, Gabriel. Please. Please make me come."

It was like she’d been saying this since the moment she met him, since the moment their hands touched and shockwaves of recognition shot through them.

"Lift your skirt," he commanded, and his voice was a quiet rumble.

Kris Calvert

What I love about writing about love

I’m a hopeless romantic and I suppose that helps to fuel the story lines and ideas, but mostly I love writing about love against all the odds. For me when characters suffer greatly they have a different perspective on life and love. My goal is not for the reader to just fall in love with the characters but to fall in love with love. I also write hopeful in love characters — people who refuse to give up on the idea that love is somewhere out there for them. I wrote a novella for Valentine’s Day last year and while at a convention a young girl stopped me and asked if I was the Kris Calvert who’d written, “Be Mine.” And when I said yes, she hugged me and told me that after reading it she was now “looking for love” instead of waiting for it to show up on her doorstep. It made my entire weekend at the con. I like to entertain the reader, but I always want them to come away with something too.

"You look amazing in this dress. I've been pretending all night that there's something I want to do more than get you out of it."

"What would you do with me if you got so lucky?"

"I'd keep you up all night, for starters." He slides a hand into my hair and traces the side of my neck with his thumb. His groan rumbles through me. "Tell me what you came here for."

I thought that was pretty clear. "I'm wearing extremely slutty underwear. What do you think?"

His nostrils flare and his breathing goes thready. "I think I'm going to have to up my game, because now I want to see it."

I have to bite back a smile. "Good," I say. My heart thumps out a beat, probably Morse code for please and thank you.

"How slutty is this underwear of yours?"

I lick my lips. "Oh, it's damn near whorish."

"Let me see it, Liz."

I lift my chin and prop my hands on my hips. "Seriously? That's all the seduction I get? Let me see it?"

He steps closer until I have to crane my neck to look at him, and holy hell he smells good. "What game are we playing here, Rowdy?" he murmurs against my ear. "Is this the one where we pretend we don't want each other and sleep alone..." His fingers skim down my shoulder and my eyes float closed. "Or is it the one where I make you come so hard you scream my name and tomorrow you act like you want nothing to do with me?"

"Are those my only choices?" I ask, but I keep my eyes closed, focusing on the feel of his rough fingers dancing across my skin. The truth is, I don't want to play either game. I'm done playing games when it comes to Sam. I'm done pretending I don't want him when I do, and I'm done pretending our annual one-night stand is enough for me.

"Tell me you aren't going to run away in the morning. Promise me you won't shut me out again."

I don't know what that means, and I'm too scared to analyze it. My eyes are still closed when he takes my chin in his fingers and tilts my face up to his, still closed when he brushes his lips over mine and when I open under him because I'm helpless to this man's kiss.

"Promise me," he repeats.

"I won't run away." Then I unzip my dress and let it fall to the floor in a puddle, and my boldness is rewarded. Sam's lips part and his breath escapes him in a rush.

He steps back and takes me in. The bra is strapless, black lace demi-cups that lift my breasts until they threaten to spill out. The panties — what there is of them — are a thong in matching black lace. Their fine lace straps sit in a sharp V high on my hipbones.

A ringlet of hair escaped my up-do, and he takes it between his fingers and twirls it around. I deserve a medal for not melting right here at his feet.

He hooks his index finger under the black bow between my bra cups. "Did you wear this for me?" His voice is a husky whisper that I can't deny.

"Yes."

His fingers skim my belly, trace over my hip, following the lace of my thong behind me to where the straps meet at the small of my back. My breath catches as he takes the fabric path over the curve of my tailbone and down, his fingers bringing every nerve ending to life as they pass. Electric pleasure whips through me.

"Fourteen months since I've touched you," he says. "Fourteen months since I've gotten to hear the way you breathe when you're turned on, since I've gotten to listen to you scream as I make you come. Tell me you haven't thought about it."

"I'd be lying."

"Don't lie," he says, eyes hot and intense. "Just tell me you want me."
