✿ Excerpt ✿

The rain pelted my face, making my tears obsolete on the dreariest day of my life. I watched the wooden coffin being lowered into the ground with long leather straps. My world had changed in a matter of moments.

Part of me wished I could go back to those precious seconds before my mom had revealed the truth about my name. What I thought had been real was actually a lie.

A lie.

The coffin touched down on the soaked earth. Three men, known as Watchers in our private society, were to the right of the burial hole. They pulled the leather straps from underneath the coffin, causing a sound that had me gritting my teeth.

These were the last moments before my mom would be buried for all eternity. Forever is a long time. It has no end and no beginning.

The Watchers, men over eighteen years of age who had taken an oath of commitment to The Light, stepped away from the grave. Most of the time, they were nineteen before they officially took the title due to the extreme training and discipline of the teachings. Essentially, they watched over our way of life, keeping it pure and simple, ensuring all of our laws were followed. The outside world was filled with sin and was doomed. Sometimes, I felt the position was used as a way to keep females uninformed. Questioning thoughts were not appropriate according to the teachings.

The rain continued as the men put their hands behind their backs and looked toward the Keeper, the leader of our community.

We never spoke of the outside world. There were things we needed from it to survive, but we peacefully coexisted. All of my life, I stayed within the walls of our community called The Society. At the back of my mind, I always wondered what life was like beyond the borders.

Stoically, I stood at the head of the burial hole next to the Keeper. An eerie chill ran down my spine being so close to him. Normally, I tried to avoid his presence at all costs.

Lightning struck and I had to fight not to flinch. We patiently waited until the Keeper deemed it time to speak. The Keeper made all the laws and saw to it that visions he received from The Light became realty. I never understood what The Light was, but to question it was blasphemy. Basically, we were to blindly follow. Something never seemed right with that thought process, but that was life.

The rest of the community, known as Charges, stood behind the Watchers as their eyes casted on the casket.

Thunder rolled through the area as the rain came down harder. My bonnet pressed against my face as I spared a glance at the Keeper. He had on his black tall hat. His shock-white hair peeped out underneath the brim. Every time I took in his wrinkled, papery white face, I shivered. Something had always seemed off about him. My mind was numb as I tried to process the loss.

♡ Excerpt Reveal ♡ King (King #1) by T.M. Frazier @TM_Frazier @RSofRomance

"I hate the way you made me feel. Well, most of the time." I spat. I was tired of dancing around the truth. "I hate the confusion you bring into my already confused life. I need this back and forth shit to end." I took a deep breath. "I can't take it anymore. You like me. You hate me. You like me. You want to kill me. You want to fuck me. You want me to stay. You want me to live. My head is fucking spinning over here." My buzz faded faster than the setting sun. "You should leave. I don't want you here," I added.

"I know. I don't care." King said.

"Oh, I'm fully aware that you don't care. That I know."

"You don't know shit, Pup." King barked.

"Oh yeah? So you didn't just spend the entire night at the carnival all over me, saying sweet shit to me, making me feel like this stupid thing between us is something more than just a stupid thing, only to whip out your dick with someone else the very first chance you got? Go back to the fucking house, King. Go back to that girl. I hope she's everything you wanted."

"I can't," King said evenly.

"Why not? Seemed easy for you before."

"Because, Pup, I can't because I don't want to. No matter how hard I try to fight this, I'm drawn to you. You think I like this back and forth shit? You think you're the only one who's fucking confused here?" He shook his head like he couldn't believe the words that were coming out of his mouth. "I'm drawn to you," he repeated turning my chin up to him.

"What do you expect? Am I supposed to fall at your feet and thank you for being 'drawn to me'?" Not only was he confusing, he was fucking infuriating. "Drawn to me? You're drawn to me! Well, let me just take off my fucking panties then, and let's do this shit. Yeah, you were really drawn to me. Tell me something, KING. Do most first dates end with the guy getting sucked off by another girl? I mean, I've never been on one, so you tell me. I could be wrong here. Because if the answer is yes, then this date has gone fucking swimmingly!"

"I'm... FUCK! You think you know everything but you don't. All you do is run those pretty lips of yours and expect me to be able to just give into you!" King threw his hands up in the air. "You make me fucking crazy, you know that!" he shouted.

"I make YOU crazy? How the fuck do you think I feel? Most of the time I don't know if you want to kill me or fuck me!" I screamed, every single word he spoke ignited my anger until it wasn’t something I could even begin to hold back.

King had the audacity to actually smile. He leaned forward and whispered seductively against my cheek, "Can't I want both, Pup?"

I pulled back and stood up.

"NO! You can't! And stop calling me, Pup. It's a stupid fucking name. I'm not your fucking pet!"

I paced the dock. My rage was at a boiling point I couldn't turn off. This was his fault. He'd made me into this lunatic.

King stood and grabbed my face with both hands, forcing me to look at him. "Yes you are," he said, as he lowered his lips and brushed them softly against mine in a move so gentle, so unlike him, it took me a few seconds before I registered what was happening.

Then, my anger returned, in full force. Using both my hands, I pushed against his chest until he had no choice but to release me.

"Fuck you! You don't want to keep me!" I shouted over my shoulder as I made my way to the front of the house and started down the gravel driveway. "Do you think I'm stupid? You wouldn't be getting your jollies while I'm in the next room if it was me you wanted."

A large hand grabbed my shoulder and spun me around.

"Let go of me!" I shouted.

"Listen, Pup. I«ve tried it your way. I tried gentle just now, but you didn't listen. Now, we're going to do it my way, and you're going to fucking listen. Don't make me have to cuff you again." He warned.

✿ Excerpt ✿

Prologue

Ash

"Where the fuck have you been?" a man's voice growled as soon as I entered the conference room.

My eyes flashed to his for only a single second before I recognized them. The door had barely clicked behind me but I already wanted nothing more than to bolt. My heart raced and my mouth dried.

I had to get out of there.

"Um..." I stalled, giving myself time to formulate a plan.

"Sit. Down," he ordered, pushing out the chair next to him, but there was no way I was getting that close.

"I'm good," I said, taking a step backwards toward the door.

"Don't even think about it," he snapped. "I swear to God, if you so much as open that door..." His words may have trailed off, but the threat was clearly stated.

I swallowed hard, and slowly walked to the chair farthest away from him, perching on the very edge—waiting for just the right moment to escape.

He looked down at the name badge around my neck and quirked an eyebrow.

"Victoria?"

"You can call me Tori if it's easier." I tried to fake a smile, but it only seemed to infuriate him. He took several calming breaths, which did nothing to dampen the blaze brewing in his angry eyes.

"I've been looking for you, Ash." He snarled my name.

"Oh, yeah? Well, mystery solved. Here I am." I pushed back to my feet, but was halted when his fist pounded against the table. I jumped as my whole body flinched from the surprise.

When the room fell silent, I slowly looked back up to find him staring at me with a murderous glare. Even sitting down I could tell he was huge, and as he held my gaze, the tense muscles in his neck and shoulders strained against the cotton of his grey Henley. He blinked at me for several seconds before finding his voice again.

"You live in a homeless shelter," he stated definitively, as if the words told a story all of their own.

And maybe they did.

"I work at a homeless shelter," I quickly corrected.

Only he corrected me just as fast. "In exchange for a permanent place to live... In. A. Homeless. Shelter." He enunciated every single syllable.

I looked away, because it was the truth.

A truth that I hated.

But the God's honest truth nonetheless.

Tears welled in my eyes and I battled to keep them at bay.

My life was hard, but him being there made it infinitely harder. If I could just escape that room, I could disappear again. It wasn't ideal, but neither was him showing up.

"I want you to leave." I lied with all the false courage I could muster.

"I can't do that. You stole something of mine."

"Look, I don't have your book anymore."

A knowing smirk lifted one side of his mouth. "Liar," he whispered, reaching into the chair beside him, revealing the tattered book and ceremoniously dropping it on the table.

My eyes went wide, and without a conscious thought, I dove across the table after it.

That was mine.

Not even he could have it.

Just as quickly as the book appeared, he snatched it away and grabbed my wrist.

I slid off the table and tried to pull my arm from his grasp. It was a worthless attempt though because even if he had suddenly released me, his blue eyes held me frozen in place.

"Three fucking years," he seethed.

"I had to," I squeaked out as the tears streamed down my cheeks.

"Three. Fucking. Years, Ash. You took something that belonged to me." He released my arm and pushed to his feet.

My mouth fell open and a loud gasp escaped as he took two impossible steps forward.

Pinning me against the wall with his hard body, he lifted a hand to my throat and glided it up until his thumb stroked over my bottom lip. Using my chin, he turned my head, and dragged his nose up my neck, stopping at my ear.

Sucking in a deep breath, he released it on a gravelly demand. "And I want her back."

My breath hitched.

I'd waited years to hear those words.

If only I could have trusted them.

"Flint, please."

✿ Excerpt ✿

She walks up the stairs, and straight away my heart leaps from my chest, beating a staccato that raps into my throat, the pulse point at my wrist, all throughout my body. I go from steady to strung-out in the blink of an eye.

"Mum," I call, and this time on the staircase, she spins around.

"Yes?" She frowns.

Don't go up there,

I try to say the words, but my stupid voice won't work. My mouth moves, but no sound comes out, and Mum tilts her head to the side. "Lia..."

Don't!

I try to scream so loud my lungs hurt, and still, nothing.

Don't go into your bedroom.

You can't see that.

It will ruin you.

"Lia, you're normally such a sensible girl." She sighs and turns her back, then walks up the stairs again.

My voice mightn't work but my feet do, and I charge after her, leaping up those stairs two at a time. She floats down the hall toward their room, and I run, run as fast as I can, and grab onto her shoulder just as she tightens her grip on the door.

"Lia, will you drop it?" She turns to face me. "I'm just going to see if your father is home. What harm could I possibly do?"

My stupid voice is without once again, and as I try to yell at her, to tell her that no, she shouldn't go in there, that seeing what's behind that door will destroy her—

She twists the handle.

She opens the door.

And she screams.

And straight away I'm back on the couch, hearing that blood-curdling noise that chills me to my very bones, that signifies the start of the end of life as I know it. I race up the stairs to try help her, to try and make it stop, but when I get there she has collapsed in the hall.

She's broken.

And nothing I try to do will fix that.

"Wanna tell me the fucking truth about Agostino? Tell me why you didn't tell Jonas about him?" My voice is steady and full of authority. I am the President of the Savage Angels and I didn't get here by being a fucking pushover.

He stares at me before glancing at Jonas, who stands beside me. "I wasn't sure it was him until I went into the café. He's ruthless. He is a Captain in the Abruzzi Family."

"You've already told me that." I pause and look at him in the mirror behind the bar. "Tell me why he's got you so spooked? Tell me why you’re all packed up to fucking leave?" I growl at him.

"Prez, I've been a loyal member for years," he says, staring back at me in the mirror. "If I've made a mistake, I would hope that you and Jonas would take that into consideration."

Now I'm fucking confused. I have no idea what the hell he's talking about. "Are you asking for leniency? Before you tell me what you've done..." My pulse picks up and I try harder to remain calm and in control. "Answer this... would you forgive the sin? Would you spare you if the tables were turned?"

"Prez, we need to call Church." Jonas interrupts before Fith has a chance to answer.

I nod and look at Fith. "Whatever the fuck you've done, you better not have betrayed the MC. If you've endangered us..." I shake my head at him and stand. In a voice that everyone in the clubhouse can hear I say, "Call everyone, Church in two hours. Fith is not to leave the clubhouse." I stalk outside into the sunshine. It's my first day back and it feels like everything has gone hay‐fucking‐wire.
