"You're disappointed I didn't sleep with you last night?" Ryker asked.

"Not at all. I enjoy sleeping alone. I have more room."

"You lie, angel. I could feel your disappointment this morning. All you have to do is tell me you want me and I'll stay. I have to hear it."

"You know I want you, Ryker. I'm sure you could figure that out the other night."

My whole life, I never needed anyone to protect me, not even my parents. And when it came down to it, they didn't do a very good job when it came to Kade. I knew I could survive on my own. Admitting I needed or even wanted someone was foreign to me. Saying the words out loud was near impossible.

"You showed me, but haven't told me. Words can be powerful," he replied.

Rolling my eyes, I got out of bed and threw on some clothes before going downstairs. He was in the kitchen with his back to me, shirt off, wearing only a pair of boxers. Holy fuck. "So if I take off my clothes and lay down on the table, you wouldn't have sex with me?"

He chuckled. "Nope."

"You sure?"

"Yep." He continued on with cooking while I stood there, dumbfounded. I didn't believe him for a second. His back stiffened when I took off my shirt and pants and climbed up on the table.

"I am so hungry," I announced, waiting for him to turn around. When he did, he completely ignored me and sat down with his plate of food.

He pointed to the counter. "Your plate's up there."

"You're seriously not going to look at me?"

He studied an invisible spot on the table and placed a piece of bacon in his mouth, crunching it slowly. "You're not ready for that."

I waited for him to sneak a peek but he didn't. "Who's the stubborn one now?"

He chuckled. "Still you, sweetheart. You have me beat."

✿ The Author ✿

I live outside Washington, D.C. with my wonderfully supportive husband and two daughters, one of which is approaching her teenage years. Help us all! If that isn't enough, we have a Great Dane and an English Bulldog to keep us on our toes. It's crazy around here and I love every minute of it!

Writing is my third career. I didn't set out to be a writer, it was just meant to be. My Mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech prepared me well for my first career as an Engineer/Program Manager. My second career was in Human Resources. Long story, but I figured it out. I believe the best start for a writing career is to be a reader first and I've been an avid reader my whole life. I've loved to read ever since I picked up my first Nancy Drew mystery in the fourth grade. Now I love reading just about everything, but I don't read sad books and I don't watch sad movies either for that matter, no matter how many awards they've won. Life's too short and who needs all that strife to bring us down?

Many of my words have been penned late into the evening, which explains why I've never viewed whatever television show you recommend to me. I would, however, love to hear your recommendations for a great read!

✿ Excerpt ✿

I pulled the cruiser into Jackie's driveway. What the hell was wrong with me? It was only yesterday that I'd gotten her off and yet here I was, sitting unannounced in her driveway like a stalker.

If I'd thought it difficult to get her off my mind before, what had happened in the wine cellar had made it damn near impossible.

Everyone I'd talked to had said the same thing — that she'd turned down each and every cop or fireman that had asked her out. No one was sure if she was just trying to keep her personal life outside of the work environment or what, but I intended to find out. The insane pull between us didn't leave me any other choice.

With a sigh, I unbuckled my seatbelt and glanced at the small bungalow. It was cute with white siding and black shutters. Hanging baskets of colorful flowers hung from hooks around the veranda and a kickass bicycle was leaning against the side of the house. That helped to explain why she had such a firm ass.

I opened the door to the cruiser when the front door of the house burst open, and Jackie stood there frozen, her hand held to her chest and such an expression of fear on her face that I bolted out of the car and up the front steps.

"What's wrong?" I demanded as soon as I was in front of her.

"Wh-what are you doing here?" she asked in barely a whisper.

I relaxed a fraction once it was clear she was okay. "I figured you could use a lift to Don's place for your car. Didn't think you would've driven home last night." I shrugged. "It's been quiet today, so I popped by to see if you wanted me to drive you over."

She released a pent-up breath and relief washed over her face. "Oh, thank God."

I frowned and gripped her upper arms. "What's going on? Everything okay?"

She glanced down at where my hands lay on her soft skin and looked back up to me, blinking twice. "It's nothing. When I saw the cruiser in the driveway... never mind." She shook her head.

I studied her for a moment. She was sexy just rolling out of bed with her hair thrown in a messy bun and last night's make-up still on her face. "You sure?"

She nodded and her eyes flicked down to my hands once more. "Why are you always touching me whenever I see you?" Her voice had come out all breathy, not at all convincing me that she didn't like my hands right where they were.

I grazed her collarbones with my thumbs, causing goose bumps to form on her skin. "I think you know exactly why."
