This Much Space
Twelve Beats an a Bar #2
K.K. Hendin

Release Date: March 16th 2015

✾ Synopsis ✾

Olivia is Anna Wintour's worst nightmare, and she doesn't give a shit. She's wanted to go into fashion design her whole life, and nothing is going to stop her fabulous plus sized self. Not even her boss from hell, or the fact that she's the fat Cinderella of the most exclusive lingerie store in Bushwick, Ohio. She's sworn off dating, because she is focused, dammit, and will not get distracted by anyone in college. She has shit to do and places to go, be it on her own with the clothing she makes, or with the girls in Twelve Beats In A Bar, the all-female a cappella group she's part of.

Why do group projects always have to ruin everything?

Thierry Acosta has it all. Shortstop on Bushwick University's baseball team, amazing grades in college, everything he could want. When he gets paired with Olivia for a group project, things are only getting better. And then his dad loses his job, and Thierry's life falls apart. He can't manage to get himself to practice, to class... anywhere. He's got the scars on his wrists to prove that this has happened before, but he thought he was better. He thought he could deal with something like this. The cuts on his thighs say otherwise.

Before they know it, Olivia and Thierry's relationship has gone from casual project partners to not-so-casual more-than-friends. But when things take a turn for the worse, can they face the growing reality of a relationship that's become much serious than either of them expected - or wanted?

Ariel comes rushing through the door. "I'm here!" She drops down on the collection of oversized pillows. "And I hate everything and everyone."

"What happened?"

"Nothing. Idiot professors giving dumb homework."

"Ugh, yeah." Julianne rolls her eyes and reaches for Marco. "Gimme my boyfriend."

"Is he supposed to be falling asleep now?" I ask Marisol as I pass a sleepy Marco to Jules.

"Only a little nap."

"Done and done." Jules cuddles Marco. "I love you, handsome. We're gonna run away to Aruba, okay?"

"Not Jamaica? Bermuda? Bahama?" Dakota asks.

"He's not a pretty mama. Otherwise, we'd be going to Kokomo."

"God, that sounds nice around this time of year," Hayley says. "No snow. Just sunshine. That would be the best thing ever."

"Would it be the best song ever?" Letty asks, grinning.

"Swear to God, Letty, if you make one more One Direction reference I'm going to throw you out a window." I say.

"You know you love them," she sings.

"Oh, come on. A group of goofy British guys? Singing goofy songs? Shirtless, on occasion? What's the downside?"

"The boy band part." I shudder. "At least they're not wearing the hideous 90's costumes. Then I would really hurt someone."

"That should be our next thing!" Brianna exclaims. "Boy bands!"

Megan bursts into laughter. "That would be amazing."

Amber's cracking up. "Oh my God. And the only thing that would make it all better was if we choreographed some super cheesy dance moves. That would be the greatest thing to ever happen ever."

I can just imagine all the Beats, singing *NSYNC and BackStreet Boys, complete with the cheesy dance moves.

"That video would go so viral, I don't even know," Amber says.

"That's like the ultimate Buzzfeed link," Dakota says. "People would lose their shit over that."

"Should we do it, then?"

"I think a better question is, when are we doing it?" I ask. "Because we should all fire ourselves if we don't actually don't boyband the shit out of a bunch of songs."

"Please," I added, realizing I needed him on my side, and unable to avoid the hint of desperation in my tone. I mentally cringed. "Please don't tell anyone I'm here."

He assessed me, leaning back, one arm slung along the empty chair back next to him and his eyes narrowed. There was a gemstone that exact color. What was it called?

I frantically thought of a way to explain what I was doing here. And I wished I could see something else in his expression through the facial hair.

"Fine," he said finally, with a stiff nod.

"Yes, fine."

"What are you hiding from?" I asked suddenly, not sure where the question came from.

I almost missed the flicker of shock in his gaze, before he shrugged nonchalantly. "And we won't ask each other questions."

"Okay," I agreed, with abundant relief, despite the weirdness of our situation.

Well, well, well. Wasn't that an interesting puzzle? Why would a guy who was obviously well-spoken and educated, from what I could tell, take on the lonely job of looking after an isolated cottage in the middle of nowhere?

The silence was extremely uncomfortable as we both regrouped.

Eventually he sighed. "You look better without all the black shit all over your face."

Obviously, he was referring to the black eyeliner and lipstick I'd taken to wearing. It matched my nails, my usual clothes and my mood. And it hid me. People's eyes glided away from me when I started dressing like that, so I kept it up. It made things easier for me out in the world. All I had to do was also block out the whispers in the hallways of my preppy school. It had the added benefit that my parents hated it.

"Well, you'd probably look better without that hairy shit all over your face." I bit my lip as soon as the words were uttered.

Seriously, sometimes I had no filter.

There was movement in his beard.

Was he actually going to smile? His caramel eyes crinkled up and suddenly his beard split open in a wide smile filled with perfect white teeth, and a snort of laughter came out. He was almost beautiful, not that I was into older guys. I didn't know where to look, but his wheeze of laughter was infectious and I found myself fighting my own smile.

Then he took a deep breath. "I... I was in love with your sister. That's how you know me," he said.

The words were out there so suddenly, and he looked so shocked that he'd uttered them, that neither of us spoke for interminable minutes.

No questions.

Abruptly, he got up, scraping the chair across the old wooden floor, and walked to the front door. He paused a moment, his shoulders rigid, then yanked the door and smacked the screen open. In a moment, he was gone, both doors slamming shut behind him, leaving a vast emptiness in his wake.

✾ Synopsis ✾

Kensington Worth had a vision for her senior year. It involved her best friends, her posh private school in downtown Chicago and time alone with her piano until her audition was perfected, a guaranteed ticket into the best music programs in the world.

Instead, a nightmare took over.

It didn't happen all at once, but her life unraveled quickly — a tiny thread that evil somehow kept pulling until everything precious was taken from her. She was suddenly living miles away from her old life, trapped in an existence she didn't choose — one determined to destroy her from the inside, leaving only hate and anger behind. It didn’t help that her neighbor, the one whose eyes held danger, was enjoying every second of her fall.

Owen Harper was trouble, his heart wild and his past the kind that's spoken about in whispers. And somehow, his path was always intertwined with Kensington's, every interaction crushing her, ruining her hope for any future better than her now. Sometimes, though, what everyone warns is trouble, is exactly what the heart needs. Owen Harper was consumed with darkness, and it held onto his soul for years. When Kensington looked at him, she saw a boy who'd gotten good at taking others down when they threatened his carefully balanced life. But the more she looked, the more she saw other things too — good things... things to admire.

Things... to love. Things that made her want to be reckless.

And those things... they were the scariest of all.

✿ Excerpt ✿

"You're a virgin, right?" Owen says, his question surprising me, igniting a fire over my face and making me feel sick and fearful and wonderful all at once. His smile is soft, and he's not making fun of me, but I'm somehow ashamed that I don't know what to do, that I'm inexperienced.

"I am. I'm sorry," I say, and he lowers his head with a small laugh. When he lifts to look at me again, he lowers himself, resting the weight of his body on top of mine, the heat of his skin covering me, warming me completely, and all my breasts want is the feeling of his skin against them, no more barriers in between.

"Kens, don't apologize. It makes you beautiful. I just wanted to make sure I didn't make any assumptions, to make sure I treat you... right," he says, his lips kissing me softly, and then gliding down my chin and neck as he raises himself over me again. He pauses when his mouth is right between my breasts, resting his chin on the center clasp of my bra, and he looks up at me, waiting for me to tell him it's okay to move forward.

I nod slightly, biting my lip and closing my eyes, arching my back, wanting to press into him harder. Owen's teeth grip the clasp in the center of my bra, and I don't know if he's torn it open or managed to unhook it, but I feel the lacey material begin to slide open, releasing the tension over my breasts, but keeping my nipples covered. The sensation of his tongue on the curve of my breast drives the arch in my back deeper, causing the material of my bra to completely fall to the sides. The cool rush of air on my nipples leaves them feeling hungrier somehow, and I look down, my eyes meeting Owen's, his sexy smile paused right above one of the peaks. I watch as he leans down, his eyes on mine the entire time, his tongue reaching out and taking a taste of my body, the hardness of my nipple responding with shivers across my skin.

Oh. My. God.

Fun Facts about Wild Reckless

1. I set this book in Woodstock, Illinois for two enormous reasons. One, my husband is from that neck of the woods, and the way he talks about this town is exactly the feeling this book needed. I've been there, soaked it in, loved it and could feel Woodstock in my bones when I wrote. As much as I want the characters to come alive in this story, I hope the town does too. I hope it lives and breathes and evokes every sense in the reader. And the second reason is John Hughes. He filmed here a lot — here and around the area — and that man's movies pretty much set the foundation for my adolescence.

2. Phantom Ant is mentioned once in the book. This is a little inside joke between my husband and I that started with one of those itches you get on your leg or foot, the ones that feel like an ant but are nothing. We call them phantom ants, and the first time we said that, we thought it would be a hell of a band name. In Reckless, the dream is realized.

3. The tone of this book, more than any other, was influenced by the music I was listening to at the time. There's a Spotify playlist for it, and I encourage readers to give it a listen while they read:
If you don't do Spotify, just embrace the band War on Drugs and you'll get a really good sense of the mood.

4. Sometimes I write all day, and sometimes it's mostly in the afternoons. This book — it happened at night, often late at night. It needed that.

5. Kensi plays the xylophone in this story, and so did I in high school. When it comes to band geek lore, I know what I'm talking about ;-)

6. I love NCAA hoops, as does the hubby. There was a lot of debate over colleges that would fit the Owen Harper style of play in our house.

7. In my journalism days, I covered the police beat for a while. I was privy to a lot of drug and gang research and some up-way-too-close-and-personal autopsy experiences. I got to put a lot of that to work in Reckless.
