PROLOGUE

I was mad at the world, at the whiskey for not being strong enough, at the drugs for not lasting long enough, at the fucking whores I banged for not getting me off when it was my fault my dick was fucking useless after a bucket of fucking blow. I went so far as to be pissed at random people on the street for laughing or smiling when I felt like I'd never be able to smile or laugh again.

How dare they?

How fucking dare they be move on with their lives like my friend hadn't just died.

I was on the verge of losing what little sanity I had left when I rode out of Logan's Beach and set off to find a place, or places, where I could numb myself against the feelings that followed me from town to town, cheap motel to cheap motel, girl to girl, high to fucking high.

Then, this pink haired girl from the past came barreling into my life and it was like for the first time, I'd found a purpose. A real genuine purpose and not just some shit Chop spewed out as orders that I and every other member of the Beach Bastards took as bible, but a true reason to live again.

To WANT to live again.

Someone to live for.

Ti was my chance at some sort of real happiness when Lord fucking knows I had no idea what that really was before her. The only glimpses of real genuine happiness I'd ever had came courtesy of Preppy, King, and of course Grace. Like when King tattooed us for the first time and we loved them, even though they were crooked and downright fucking awful. Like when Grace made me my very first birthday cake. Like the time King Prep and I sat at the top of the water tower and thought the world was ours to take.

Because at that time, it was.

Then there was Ti and my new happiness became the first time I saw her smile. The first time I kissed her. The first time I tasted her pussy by the fire. The first time she let me inside of her, shamelessly pushing through her virginity in a frantic need to make her mine.

Because that's what she was.

That's what she would always be.

And I will kill every motherfucker who dares to try and take her from me.

Mine.

♡ Cover Reveal + #Giveaway ♡ Beast (Heroes Ever After #1) by Alana Albertson @AlanaAlbertson @IndieSagePromo #ComingSoon

Beast
Heroes Ever After #1
by
Alana Albertson

Publication Date: March 22, 2016

Genres: Contemporary Romance, New Adult

✾ Synopsis ✾

Wanted: Beautiful woman to be the mistress of my manor. Must be single. No sex required, dynamic conversation imperative. Salary $100,000 for a one-month contract.

A viral post. Thousands of women applied — including me. I told myself I was crazy, but the money could pay for my father's medical treatments and save his life.

A month later, I received the call.

I'd been chosen.

A man with a mask greeted me, and though he filled my days with a library full of books, and dressed me in the finest clothes, he never shed his cover nor touched me intimately, despite my growing hunger for him.

He was equal parts Iron Man, Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty's Beast. But he wasn't a superhero, the tragic villain of a novel turned musical, or the cursed creature of a fairy tale.

This former Marine was trapped in his own nightmare — demons from the war he had fought in haunted his thoughts, scars from the bomb he jumped on marked his skin.

True love could free him from his self-imposed prison, but he'd have to let me in. Opening the door to his cabin was the easy part, but the real test would be allowing me into his heart.

Otherwise, he would always remain a beast.

✿ Excerpt ✿

Chapter One — Isa

I stared at my phone, rereading a post from Reddit that had gone viral.

Wanted: Beautiful woman to be the mistress of my manor. Must be single. No sex required, dynamic conversation imperative. Salary $100,000 for a one-month contract.

The opportunity of a lifetime. Thousands of women had applied, the world was anxious to learn the identity of the man the press had hailed as "the dark bachelor".

Though I'd never purchased a lottery ticket, nor did I believe in get-rich-quick schemes, I hastily filled out the application, never thinking for a second that I had a chance. The process had been easy enough — agree to submit to a background check if chosen, send a picture, and write an essay (100 words or less) answering the question, "What I'd do with the $100,000".

Well, that was easy. My words poured onto the page.

I would pay off my father's medical bills, and provide him with the best care. He has brain cancer, and insurance hasn't covered all of his treatments. I dropped out of college and work three jobs to support him. I would like to spend more quality time with him before he passes. My father is proud, independent man, a Marine who served Vietnam, and he hates to be a burden. He has dedicated his life to me, and I'm happy to take care of him during his final years. I would be forever grateful to you for this opportunity.

I attached a picture of me wearing a loose-fitting grey T-shirt, jean shorts, and flip-flops. For makeup, I had only used a tinted moisturizer, purple eyeliner to accentuate my green eyes, mascara, and nude lipstick. My black hair hung like a shower curtain around my face. I wanted to make sure I wasn't sending a provocative image to this man. Though I strongly doubted whoever he was only wanted a platonic companion, I was positive hundreds of girls would send in bikini shots, or nude selfies, so if that was what that guy was looking for, then he'd have plenty of options. I figured the chances of me being chosen were so slim, it was worth the risk to apply.

What kind of man posted an ad like this? He could've been a serial killer, or some psycho. One newspaper swore he was a famous tech billionaire, another speculated that he was a deformed recluse.

I didn't put much thought into it — until I received the call from a blocked number.

"Hello?" I answered my cell late one night.

"May I speak to Isa?" A man with a deep, sexy voice asked.

I had a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach. "This is Isa."

"This is the man who posted the ad."

Dios mío! Was this a joke? "Uhm hi. What's your name?"

He laughed, a gruff, sexy laugh. He sounded younger than I'd thought he'd be. I had assumed he was an older gentleman when I read the ad. "You can call me Bruce."

The way he said Bruce made me certain it wasn't his name. "Okay, Bruce. Am I a finalist or something? Why are you calling me?"

"I wanted to hear your voice." He paused, and exhaled. "Is your dad going to be okay if I pick you? Does he have someone else to step in to take care of him?"

I didn't even know this guy and he seemed to care more about what happened to my father than my own friends did. "Honestly, no. I didn't think I'd be chosen so I never really considered what I'd do." I felt so stupid. I should've never applied. I would have to quit my jobs, find somewhere for my father to go, and someone to attend to him. "I'm sorry to waste your time. I applied on a whim. I heard that thousands of girls applied. Why me? I mean, I could really use the money, but—" I swallowed a sob. Was he really about to pick me, was I about to throw away this amazing opportunity so that once in my life I wouldn't have to struggle?

"Hey, look. I liked your essay — and your picture. As for why I chose you, let's just say you stood out to me. If you really want to do this, I can arrange to have someone take care of your father."

Was he for real? "Are you serious? Who are you? Why are you doing this? You sound really nice, I'm sure you can find someone to hang out with you for free."

"I have my reasons. So is that a yes?"

My hands shook. Was this really happening to me? "I don't know. I mean, I'm not going to sleep with you, if that's what you're after. I don't know anything about you; you could be an axe murder. I feel naïve even talking about this."

"I'm not expecting sex in return. And though I'm not going to tell you my real name, the Washoe County Sheriff knows who I am and you are welcome to verify with them that I have no criminal record. If you agree to meet me, I promise to show you a good time and keep you safe. I'd like to get to know you. So what do you say?"

I couldn't believe he was serious. And why wouldn't he tell me his real name? Was he famous? Notorious? "Can I think about it?"

"No. I need a decision. What's it going be?"

My heart raced. I was now completely intrigued; yet simultaneously scared to death. He promised to take care of my father, and I desperately needed this money. My breath hitched. "I'm in."

"What is that?" Oliver scowled at the gallon of milk I'd just set in the shopping cart. "Does that stuff even come from a cow?"

"Monroe!" Allison's face lit up next to me when she spotted her friend, our colleague, welcoming her with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I'm so glad you could make it. Oliver and I just got here."

Confused, I lifted the carton up in the air and skimmed over the label, thinking maybe I'd grabbed the wrong thing by mistake. Once I realized I hadn't, I cut my eyes over at him and gave him the what-in-the-world-are-you-talking-about look. "Of course it comes from a cow," I scoffed. "It's fat-free, organic milk. You said you needed some for your cereal, right?"

With a snicker, he shook his head and walked around the cart, taking the milk out of my hands and placing it back in the cooler. Then, shuffling farther down the dairy section a few feet, he reached down and pulled out a gigantic plastic jug of chocolate milk. Donning a huge grin, he proudly placed the replacement milk in the cart and gave me a triumphant nod. "You can't ruin Peanut Butter Captain Crunch with that healthy crap you picked. Chocolate milk is the only way to go. Please tell me you've tried it before."

"Uhhh... no. I've never tried any kind of Captain Crunch, not with regular or chocolate milk," I laughed. "Actually, I've never had any kind of cereal, unless you count granola or oatmeal."

"What? No cereal?!" Oliver's eyes grew wide with astonishment. "Surely you ate some when you were a kid."

"Nope. Never." I shook my head emphatically.

Moving back to the rear of the cart so he could push it down the aisle, he continued to gape at me in disbelief. "Really? Not even like the gross stuff like Shredded Wheat or Raisin Bran?"

"I'm serious. Not even the gross stuff."

He stopped momentarily to add butter, sour cream, and cream cheese to the growing pile of food, and then resumed his skeptical questioning as we headed toward the bakery. "How is that even possible? I mean, even if your mom didn't keep it in the house for whatever reason, how did you not try it when you spent the night with friends or went on vacation? Cereal is like a staple of all kids' diets. It should probably be its own food group."

I shrugged nonchalantly, pretending to read the nutritional facts on the back of a package of pita bread crackers while strolling next to him. "I dunno. I didn't grow up like most kids. I didn't stay out over at friends' houses, and at home, we had a personal chef who did all of the shopping and cooking, so I ate what was put in front of me... which was always whatever my mom wanted. She was very strict and disciplined about her diet. We usually had egg whites with fresh fruit, or something similar. Then, when I went away to boarding school, I had a meal plan, so it was pretty much the same thing. I ate whatever the cafeteria was serving that day. And I can assure you, my ass is thankful it was never a bowl of sugary cereal with chocolate milk, or I’d have lived on the elliptical machine when I wasn't studying," I joked to hide the mixture of disappointment and embarrassment coursing through me.

Glancing up, I was surprised to find him staring so intently at me, and although I had a hard time placing the expression brewing in his fascinating eyes, there was no denying my body’s physical response to his attention. Much like the first time I met him, and several occurrences since, goose bumps prickled over my skin as warmth arose in my core. He looked at me like no one had ever looked at me before, and it was equally as unnerving as it was exhilarating. I never wanted him to stop.

"What?" I questioned in a hushed voice once I realized we'd been standing in front of the baguette stand, staring at each other for who knew how long. "Is the cereal a deal-breaker on the friendly colleague thing?"

Oliver barked out a laugh, my words obviously breaking him free of whatever train of thought he’d been lost in. "No, Rizzo." He shook his head as he began moving forward again with the cart. "It's not a deal-breaker, but you are aware it's the first thing I'm making you eat when we get back to the apartment, right? I don't care how long you're gonna have to work out later. I promise every bite will be worth it."

Half an hour later, as I sat at his table slurping down the remnants of my first — but definitely not last — bowl of Peanut Butter Captain Crunch with chocolate milk, I could see the I-told-you-so smile dancing in the creases next to his eyes, and once again, he was right... it was sooo worth it. And I was starting to think he might be too.

✿ Excerpt ✿

My dad gave a lot of warnings about any member of Filthy Sound messing around with me, and he was very graphic as he went into the consequences if that were to happen. Kitt is quite clearly choosing to ignore that because, right now, he's breaking Dad's rules big time. Again.

Kitt's Adam's apple bobs as he swallows hard. "You're different."

He makes me feel different, too, like I'm not just another woman to mess around with, like I'm special. Sometimes. Then, there are many, many occasions when he makes me feel like I'm falling into a bottomless black hole.

At this moment, I feel like there's no one else. I don't want to hide my body away. He wants to see me, and I want him to as well.

"How am I different?" I ask.

"You're not a game I'm playing, Tex."

Well, that's good to hear. If he were just pushing the limits with me because he had a problem with following the rules, I'd lose it.

"Then, what are you doing? Because this definitely wouldn't be okay with my dad."

"I'm not looking to strip for your dad. Right now, I only care about what you think... what you want."

"You're asking what I want?" Best to not go there. "Are you going to regret this in the morning, Kitt?"

"Regret? No. Will I feel guilty as hell when I look him in the eyes tomorrow? Yes. But remembering one major detail makes it easier."

"What's that?"

"You're an adult, and you'll never be a one-night stand."

Bloody hell. My lungs deflate — in a good way.

If we did this, it'd be the start of something. It's dangerous to think about more with him. It could end so badly for me. I should be smart and think it through. But I can't. When I'm around him, there is no thinking, no logic, and no consequences. It's a bad combination, and I know I should stop.

But with Kitt, I can never stop.
